"Saving Jackson's Tooth" is a picture book written by Dr. Jeff Shnall and illustrated by Catherine Lee.
Why I Wrote "Saving Jackson's Tooth:"
Over my many years as a dentist I have noticed that when I tell a patient that they or their child has a cavity, some will book an appointment right away to get the cavity filled while others put it off.
Many adults don't realize that cavities get deeper the longer they are left untreated. A small cavity that can be easily fixed with a small filling will eventually become a large, deep cavity that requires much more than a simple filling to save the tooth, if it can be saved at all. This is doubly true in the case of children's teeth.
The enamel coating of a baby tooth is thinner and softer than the enamel of an adult tooth, so baby teeth are at greater risk of decay (cavities) than adult teeth.
As well, cavities in baby teeth can progress much more quickly compared to an adult tooth. Some kids don’t brush as well as adults and often their teeth are not flossed. A lot of kids eat more candy than adults. These are all things that can accelerate the growth of cavities in the teeth of children.
In order to show adults and children that if you have a cavity it is best to fill it sooner rather than later, I wrote a children's picture book called "Saving Jackson's Tooth."
The story is about a 6-year-old boy named Jackson who has a cavity in his brand new permanent molar. However no one knows the cavity is there except for his baby teeth that spotted it. Yes, his baby teeth can see and talk.
What follows is a race against time for his baby teeth to try to get Jackson to see his dentist before the cavity in their new friend, the molar gets too deep to repair.

I wrote "The Story of Jackson's Tooth"
in order to show parents and their children,
in a fun way:
- What causes cavities
- Why dental check-ups are important
- Why it is better to fill a cavity soon after it is found
- What happens if a cavity is left unfilled for too long
